How Do I Become A Therapeutic Foster Care Parent?

Call the Director of Therapeutic Foster Care Services at 928-443-5883 to set up an information meeting. When you have made the decision to become a therapeutic foster parent, you will be supported throughout the process of background checks, homestudy, training and licensing.

After a child is placed in your home, you will receive ongoing professional supervision and support, and compensation.

Who Can Be A Foster Parent?

• Male, female, single, or married, working, attending school, or at home
• 21 years or older
• Persons who complete the following: thorough background checks, assessment of abilities,
a homestudy, required training, and licensure

What Qualities Are Needed?

• Dedication to children
• Stability and commitment
• Experience working with, or have raised children
• Flexibility and time to meet a child’s needs

What Are Some Of The Responsibilities?

• Provide a safe, secure, and nurturing environment
• Attend required training
• Implement a home treatment plan assisted by an in-home consultant/therapist
• Work with a treatment team of social workers, service providers, and other professionals

What Training Is Required?

• 30 hours of professional training to develop skills to foster special needs children
• 6 hours of ongoing training per year
• DayBreak group home training

How Long Is The Commitment?

Licensing and training may take 3-6 months. The child’s placement is an average of a year.
